THE EX: 1936, The Spanish Revolution (1986)

“I wanted nothing and don’t want anything to do with order, rank orders and commands. I am as I am, a peasant who learned to read in prison, who experienced pain and death closeby, who was an anarchist without knowing it, and today, now that I know, I am even more anarchist than yesterday, when I killed to be free” from Nosotros – anarchist daily – march 1937 (in 1936 booklet).

The squats of the 80’s must had been a remarkably fertile place of exciting experiments, especially for such in the cultural field; any argument to this would eventually had to cope (and) with the case of The Ex.

The band was formed in 1979, a time when the punk explosion is in its peak, and its birthplace is the Dutch (more precisely those of Amsterdam) squats. The Ex started as a lo-fi anarcho-punk, moving gradually, through the decades, to post-punk/no wave experimental work, lately absorbing a wide range of influences, often from non Western (Hungarian and Turkish folk songs and recently African music- including music from Congo, Ethiopia and Eritrea) and non rock sources, and marked by collaborations such as with the avant-garde cellist Tom Cora in the early 90’s and with members of Sonic Youth, Dutch improvisers ICP and UK anarchist band Chumbawamba.

Their work, 1936, The Spanish Revolution, is a result of addiction, devotion, admiration, love and, I would dare to say, continuousness; it is probably the rare and privileged moment in which the aesthetic view, the political thesis and the practice of everyday action towards the world are merged into a unique peek point; a point that shines equally as an accomplishment and as a paradigm.

The Spanish Revolution was released in 1986 with two 7΄΄ records (containing four songs), accompanied by a 144 pages book. The songs are punk reworking of folk Spanish anarchist fight songs, and the book, containing mostly b&w photographs and short texts (in Dutch and English), epics the story of the short lived (1936-1939) success of large-scale anarchy in Spain.

The vinyls

The book focuses on the CNT (Confederatión National del Trabajo) [National Labor Confederation] and FAI (Federatión Anarquista Ibérica) [Iberian Anarchist Federation] action during the years of the Spanish Civil War, two organizations that formed the hard core of anarchist movement in Spain at that time. This action is presented in several fields, fields that also form the book’s structure; what is shortly depicted are these: the origins and the beginning of the revolution, the collectivization in the economic and the social field, the effect that revolution had in culture, the developments in the front and the impact that international relations and the tension ( and more often conflicts ) among communist - socialists and anarchists had to these developments, and finally the causes and the chronicle of the revolution’s failure.

The Ex does not pretend to have accomplished a historical or scientific task, and they make this clear soon enough. They also deny any claim of objectivity: “…Thus [ the foto collection] it is a compilation: neither chronological nor objective, but one-sided, partial and subjective. Only from the anarchist’s side…” Instead, they point out their aim, which has a double character: firstly, to show “…how much pleasure, imagination, devotion and energy the Spanish anarchists put in their effort to destroy once and for all the damned class of boots, ties and crucifixes…”, the fact that this attempt to revolution “…saw an explosion of creativity which only takes place when you’re finally able to conceive of something and follow through on it –to arrange your own life without hate and greed, without competition and oppression…” and finally how this effort “…was immediately attacted, terrorized and destroyed by the state and the bourgeoisie…”. Secondly, their aim is targeting to diagnose the similarities between the Spanish experiment and the present: “…For us the Spanish revolution is not just an event or incident, not just a chapter in a history book. It’s an attempt similar to what we are doing now: trying to get rid of this imposed shit system…”. With that, the conclusion comes by the Ex as an afterword: for them, the anarchist experiment of the 30’s shows that “…it certainly is possible to bring an anarchist society into practice…”.

Slideshow of some of the pictures from the book

Apart from the question about whether the Ex’s conclusion is right or not, their effort is definitely sincere, interesting and I would add beautiful: it is an example of how talent, will, inspiration and the proper environment can combine to produce a kind of art where different expression means can cooperate for the creation of a unique aesthetic result, an aesthetic result which surpasses the boundaries between traditional art fields, surpassing, in this way, and the traditional worries about the division of form and content. It is worth mentioning that the whole project (the production, the recording, the book’s design and printing, even the distribution) is carried out by the band and the squat’s facilities only, without the participation of external aid; it is like if the Ex are retrieving, with a gap of 50 years, the thread of Spanish anarchists self-organise practices to launch them, with new and different means but with the same appetite and aiming, into the present and further. The Ex’s effort, as I said already above, shines as a paradigm, a paradigm that shows the path for the way things should be handled; both in art and life.

“Reality and dreaming are different things. Dreaming is beautiful and sublime because dreams are nearly always the predecessors of what is to came, but the most sublime is to make life beautiful, to mould life beautifully” from Nosotros - march 1937 (in 1936 booklet)

DAVID THOMAS & THE PEDESTRIANS sound of the sand and other songs of the pedestrians (Rough Trade, 1981)

From the first already solo step, David Thomas goes further from the avant rock aesthetics of Pere Ubu to a more naturally breathing environment, jazzy, less electric, richer to calm daily observations and memory echoes, much closer though to improvisation. David creates many parallel atmospheres led by a vocal experimentation that separates itshelf from the other instruments. Compositions draw a bigger perimeter and the more "free" space they enclose, the more physically are permitted to express their several lunacies.

Among the other pedestrians, Chris Cutler, Phillip Moxham, Mayo Thompson, Richard Thompson and the reggae trumpeter Eddie "Tan Tan " Thornton "walked" up on the sand.

M.OXLEY & C. ABRAHAMS coal (AUS,1994)

Chris Abrahams, a "visible" and "invisible" (jazz) musician of the legendary 80`s australian underground, member or session man of several bands of the era (Laughing Clowns, Benders, The Sparklers, a.o.), after released some not very famous albums, found finally wider recognition by adding his keys to the ceremonial cosmic pulse of THE NECKS (avant post jazz trio). In the meanwhile he had a hand to some gems, that his later success should have normally moved out of shade. "COAL" is one of them. Chris plays almost all instruments here (keys, guitars, drums), leaving...Melanie Oxley`s magical vocals to "navigate" through hammond rivers of eerie flowing ... the bitter sweet songs.
Full of simple, straight, indie-soul-blues ballads, "COAL" sounds a very cool, modest and calm title for the album. It isn`t, considered this aussie fairy sets hearts on fire...

An overlooked but important, in our opinion, band in the last decade of the 20th century, THE PERC AND THE HIDDEN GENTLEMAN was formed in 1987 by TOM REDECKER and EMILIO WINSCHETTI.

The deep romantic idiosyncracy of TPMTHG slips into journeys that know no limitations through folk, acoustic, synth, kraut, psych, avant, goth...

THE PERC AND THE HIDDEN GENTLEMAN albums released firstly by hamburgian STRANGEWAYS. Some of them reissued by Sireena records which also released recently the compilation "Telegram from Meantime". Other bands related with TPMTHG are THE PERC , THE ELECTRIC FAMILY, TARAS BULBA.

CRIPPLED PILGRIMS head down hand out (US, fountain of youth, 1984)

Circa 1983-84 was a blooming time for America` s 60`s garage psych folk revival movement and all the consequenced arguing about the necessity and authenticity of it. HEAD DOWN HAND OUT , the amazing debut mini LP of Washington DC `s CRIPPLED PILGRIMS arrived then just in time to obscure both questions & answers, and make any conversation about a vanity!
Jay Moglia, genious composer of the band (the rest personel was Scott Wingo, Mitch Parker -bass, Dan Joseph - drums), draws the perfect balance between yesterday and today(1984), between post punk impetus and folk mysticism, between sound delirium and melancholic forces tight and controlled to last for a lifetime.

Head Down Hand Out is an album you get addicted to listen again and again, as if behind the near and there layers there are always new spaces you can never reach. If our brain has recepting departments for ecstasy the music brings, i can not tell how many of those mind cells this album has burnt inside mine.

Unfortunately CRIPPLED PILGRIMS was a very short lived band. By 1985 they had already disbanded. They left behind one more (inferior than this) LP "Under Water" (1985, Fountain of Youth).

BLAINE L. REININGER Byzantium (BELGIUM,1987)

From Colorado to San Francisco, from violin to electronic studies and the forming of TUXEDOMOON, from America to Europe, from TUXEDOMOON to solo albums, from Belgium to Greece, from music to movie acting,... from there to the reunion ( after 2000) of TUXEDOMOON and...and..., this is just one of the trails someone could draw on Blaine`s map of life and art. A nomadic wandering, located always close to the core of uneasy creative dreams.
Byzantium, his fourth solo effort, recorded in Bruxelles, end of 1986 with Gilles Martin, for Les Disques du Crepuscule record label. Blaine plays the most instruments (keyboards, electronics, violin, guitars, vocals) and is also responsible for the back cover notes about the establishment of Constantinople/Byzantine empire(!!). Considered the album`s references to Kraftwerk, Leonard Cohen, Orson Wells (to name but the obvious) , we see in byzantium a symbol of a young man rising into art. Blaine lays his personal mythology amongst the decisively loved ones who played "the ghosts to his teenage theatre" including also here, "some fine day", a composition from 1973 (!), recorded 1986, simply, with an acoustic guitar...
Although Byzantium misses the diversity and deepness of TUXEDOMOON sound palette, it is an important for its creator work, personal and with a high degree of artistic consciousness...

TOM ZE & GILBERTO ASSIS Santagustin (BRA, 2002)

JACQUES TATI: Jour de Fete (1949)

In a small village somewhere in France, the fairground people arrive for the carnival day. Along with the other stuff they carry, they set up a mobile cinema, where a documentary on the superb ways the American postmen have to efficiently and quickly deliver mail is presented. This is the cause for all the inhabitants to start teasing François, the postman, about his own lazy and slow way of post delivering. François decides to do his round the American way….

This is Jacques Tati’s first full-length movie, where some of the characteristics that mark his later films are present, and among them is the use of sound. Dialogues are often merged with the background noise, giving to other sounds – chickens clucks , horns, the bicycle’s bell rattle, dogs barks, doors creaks, birds tweeters, horse neighing, engines roars, insects buzzing, - the privilege of interfering with the plot, in the most hilarious ways.

Jacques Tati as Francois the postman, by Robert Doisneau

Below is a sample of music merged with such sounds; just to have a taste… (Audio extracted from the film)

MARTIN REV clouds of glory (US,1985, reissued1996)

1985 New Rose vinyl edition front cover

Martin Rev, the half of the legendary SUICIDE, recorded the material of this album 1981-84 at NY, with Marty Thau. No ALAN VEGA singing here, so don`t expect that rock and roll feeling SUICIDE uniquely created some years before without using(!) rock `n` roll instruments. Anyway these electronic excursions don`t miss much of the genuine anticomformist spirit of Martin, and they may interest funs of SUICIDE, or lovers of analog electronics, or followers of 80`s dark paths.
Clouds of Glory was 2nd Rev`s solo album and released first by French New Rose label in 1985. Reissued 1996 by RED STAR MUSIC with a new cover, including also the extra track "Island" from 1987.

THIS FLUID flud (GREECE, hitch-hyke rec,1997)

Tags like electronic, art, experimental, cinematic, avant, ambient pop, can not explain much in THIS FLUID occasion. FLUD`s texture is full of so many layers, ideas and visions of present(1997), future and past that it would take pages to speak for it properly. Its methods, technology and inclinations of blending and mixing various elements in a pop art level belong to the end of 20th century (present). Its main inspiration origins from dark/art side of 80`s and bands like Tuxedomoon, for example (past) . The result is a post everything ambience that seems to portray spaces and situations from a more and more complicated civilization, or to narrate scenarios happening near the vanishing edgeline between reality and illusion (future).

THIS FLUID: Spyros Faros and Makis Faros (samples, programming, electronics, synths, keyboards, voices, singing, bass, guitars, etc) and also Anna Maratou (cello, vocals, etc).
Additional musicians played: ud, mandolin, djembe, bendir, shakers, ceramic percussion and vocals.

ROBYN HITCHCOCK Jewels for Sophia (UK,1999)

Robyn Hitchcock, one of the greatests psych princes of all ages, equally important to Syd, reached his artistic zenith at 80`s by paying forever his debts to eternity with "I Often Dream of Trains" (1984) and "Fegmania" (1985), albums able to make you seek not existing words to speak after them or leaving you just mute. Almost one and a half decade later, and after numerous good to very good (Robyn is always like no other) works, - the man with the light bulb head turns once more himshelf on in the dark, ready again to change your strawberry mind... "Jewels For Sophia" is a grandeur ceremonial visiting to all the old haunts (also to some new very chilling ones). A black-humoured imagination, a poetry-blooded eccentric view of beauty that builds in dreams its everything...
If we sometimes feel we owe something to the world, we do because people like him have been...

THE CHILLS rolling moon 7`` (NZ, Flying Nun,1982)

Here it is "Rolling Moon", the legendary 1st single THE CHILLS cut for Flying Nun in 1982. Sound, of course, here is raw psych post-punk, hot, fresh, direct out of the core. Quite different from the more seeking pop perfectness turn the band took with "Brave Words". Without being necessarily a fan of fast electric, garagy sound, i prefer their first, up to the "The lost E.P." period. Well... i just think their flamethrowing is a bit flamelower after "The lost E.P.".

CHARLES HAYWARD my secret alphabet (UK, sub rosa,1993)

Considered as one of the best rock drummers, and been also a multi-instrumentalist and a composer, Charles Hayward, has a long history in impro, avant jazz, experimental rock scene. His music is related with the so called "Canterbury Scene", R.I.O. , and Recommended records. Member of QUIET SUN in 70`s, THIS HEAT, REGULAR MUSIC, CAMBERWELL NOW, has also joined projects together with many of the greatests musicians of these genres.
After CAMBERWELL NOW disbanded, Charles headed for solo works, and eclectic collaborations releasing nice albums like "Survive The Gesture " (1987) or this one... "My Secret Alphabet" , a collaboration with Nick Doyne-Ditmas (bass, guitar, trumpet, voc), released from the good belgian Sub Rosa label. Charles plays here drums, percusssion, keyboards, and also sings in a way it inspires you to love him . The optimist view of Charles embraces many fields of life and music and goes beyond the critical style or the complexity of the compositions. This wide, quiet ( very lively, though, esoterically) musical vision places him beside artists like Robert Wyatt.

THE BATS couchmaster (NZ, 1995)

Existing since 1982, THE BATS are one of the cornerstones of the legendary NZ underground. They come from Dunedin, "motherspring of miracles" for the 80`s (and not only) down under pop. Mainman Robert Scott has been also member of THE CLEAN, THE MAGICK HEADS, ELECTRIC BLOOD, and had played with THE CHILLS. Without breaking any new ground COUCHMASTER is one more link to the continuity of the constable post-punk/lo-fi/psych/homemade/pop values that New Zeeland, as no other country, has raised to the top.

GEORGES DELERUE le cinema de Francois Truffaut (FRA, 2004)

the art of filmic details

This compilation retraces from second "TIREZ SUR LE PIANISTE" (SHOT THE PIANIST) to last feature "VIVEMENT DIMANCHE" (CONFIDENTIALLY YOURS) the chronological continuity of the DELERUE- TRUFFAUT path, selecting from totally 11 movies, themes that have a central position in the director` s filmography. The very well aimed compiling here brings out the core of the composer`s approach to TRUFFAUT cinema. It is like the 23 pieces that cover discontinuously 23 years (1960-1983) were written for one and the same movie. This happens probably because Delerue, composing the scores, has always an observing eye to his friend himshelf, he watches him as "another director", he feels Francois intuitions. Into a constant dialogue, Delerue explores the director`s aesthetic decisions and he responds to them with clear-sighted music that reflects (gently) an equal playful irony, underlining director`s favourite things: cinema, women, devastating passions, baroque music, old Hollywood scores - Truffaut`s, finally, sense for the art of the filmic details.

MOONSHAKE dirty & divine (UK,1996)

Dirty and Divine, last Dave Callahan`s MOONSHAKE effort, recorded Dec 1995 to Feb 1996, and released by US C/Z records label. Two other LPs and some EPs had released the previous years from too pure label. Dave Callahan (after members departure to form Laika), diminished gradually the indie pop "too pure" style of the band, to focus in an avant-industrial funk-dub-jazz sound with ethno/pseudoethno,oriental-like horns, Kraut influences, and heavy use of samples. Dirty and Divine moves into untidy atmospheres of disharmony, anxiety and threat, describing confusion of a life polluted at any level. Thick waste-liquids flows poisoning the structure of the songs while Dave`s vocals have the ideal unpleasantness to express the scenery of dirt...

TOM KAZAS "Saint Or Fool" (AUS, Hitch-Hyke,1997)

TOM KAZAS, the Greek-Australian singer/guitarist of THE MOFFS, recorded and produced this album in Sydney with the help of Andrew Byrnes (drums, percussion), Ralph Marshall (bass on one song) and Mark Wilkinson (additional guitars). SAINT OR FOOL released from greek hitch-hyke records label at 1997 and it is one of the most beautiful late psych gems of the once amazing and powerful australian undergroung rock scene that had already started fading early 90`s and disappeared almost completely till the end of the decade. Anyway...this album gives you the chance to dive once more into the idiosycratic australian landscape. The starting basis is the magic spirit of 60`s, but Tom as a genuine psych-farmer carries also seeds, from both 70`s prog pop crops, and 80`s indie grounds. He transplants them into his own eastern-western soil. Saint or fool, the perfumed gardens he cultivates have an unforgetable fascination.

DEAD MOON "Trash & Burn" (US, 2001)

Το ''Trash & Burn" κυκλοφόρησε το 2001 από την γνωστή -γκαραζοψυχεδελικών φρονήματων- γερμανική MUSIC MANIAC, ενώ το 2006 ο ίδιος ο Fred συμπεριέλαβε 6 από τις 11 εδώ συνθέσεις στο ECHOES OF THE PAST (2CD, Sub Pop), ανθολογία καταληκτική του διαχρονικού απόηχου των DEAD MOON.
